Developing the Case for Implementation of Operating Room Air Decontamination Technology for Orthopedic Surgery
Russell Nassof, JD; Kathy Warye, Maureen Spencer, MEd, RN, CIC, FAPIC. Infection Control Today, September 2018.
Background
Despite evidence of the contribution of contaminated air to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and the symbiotic relationship between contaminated air and bioburden on surfaces, hospital air quality has not been a high priority from a risk mitigation perspective.
Objective
Recent innovation in air decontamination technologies make significant reduction in airborne bioburden in the OR, for the first time, both technically and economically feasible offering a new asset in the quest to eliminate SSI and meet the evidence-based standard of care.
